Big Spring Flag Football started with a simple idea: kids in Cumberland County deserved a local place to play football that was safe, affordable, and focused on fun. In 2026 we launched our first season as a pilot program at West Pennsboro Township Park.
The league was founded by Kyle Kotzmoyer and Colby Rickabaugh, childhood friends who grew up playing football in a neighborhood friend's backyard. Those pickup games taught them the game, and a lot about friendship along the way. Today each of them is a parent of three, and they started this league to give the next generation of Cumberland County kids that same love of football.
Families signed up, we settled on two divisions, 8U and 12U, and on September 20 the first flags were pulled.
We are treating this first season as a foundation. The plan is to build a lasting program that serves Cumberland County families for years to come.
Every kid plays. Every kid learns. Every kid has fun.
Small rosters mean real reps. Nobody spends the game on the sideline.
No tackling and no pads. Kids learn football without the collisions.
Sportsmanship, effort, and respect for teammates, opponents, and officials come before the scoreboard.
Longtime multi-sport youth coach in the Newville community and a parent of three, now helping bring flag football to Cumberland County kids.
Youth coach, former NCAA student-athlete, and a parent of three. Colby brings college-level experience and a coach's patience to every practice.
Flag football teaches the same skills as the tackle game: route running, footwork, throwing, catching, and reading a defense. Without the contact, younger players can focus on learning and enjoying the game.
It is one of the fastest-growing youth sports in the country, and a great first step for kids who may go on to play at the middle school and high school level.
